
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Students can use all of the help that they can get when fighting the tests.
Here is a list of various ways to support and encourage students as adult allies.
Teachers:
- Start a class discussion about standardized tests.
- Send a memo out to students and parents about the dangers of the tests.
- Convene a meeting of school staff about challenging the tests.
- Have your class write letters to the state department of education.
- Refuse to give the tests to students who don't want to take it.
Parents:
- Write letters to administrators and elected officials expressing your concerns about the tests.
- Take legal action against the testing policies of the state or the school.
- Advocate for legal opt-out laws in your state.
- Set up a parental network that works against the tests and coordinates test boycotts.
- Sponsor a forum or teach-in around testing issues.
Parents and teachers:
- Form a local coalition working to fight the tests.
- Meet with local and state representatives to discuss alternatives to high-stakes tests.
- Write letters to the editor in local newspapers on the issue.
- Vocally attend board of education meetings.
- Work together with students to strengthen a test boycott.
